John: The Maverick Gospel
Pastor Josh Cook & Chris Haywood
Seminar Room (in Auditorium on Sept. 10)
Click for notes (Adobe .pdf) : Lesson 1, Lesson 2, Lesson 3, Lesson 4,
Lesson 5, Lesson 6, Lesson 7, Supplement to Lessons 6 & 7, Lesson 8,
Lesson 9, Lesson 10
John's different purpose, different approach and different emphasis make his gospel very different from those written by Matthew, Mark and Luke. As a result, his book resonates clearly with spiritual needs that are common to the 21st century. John was an independent thinker who didn't follow established patterns or worry about conforming to what was expected. Instead, he was more concerned about revealing who Jesus was and what he did for us. |

Staying Strong in the Tough Times: A Study of I Peter
Pastor Ben DeBoef & Pastor Josh Cook
Seminar Room
Click for class notes: Lesson 1, Lesson 2, Lesson 3, Lesson 4
None of us is a stranger to difficulty. Whether we face difficulty at work, school, in our neighborhoods or even in our homes, it is challenging to go through rough times. But what about the trouble that comes as a result of being a Christian? Most of us have probably never faced physical danger because of our faith, but we’ve probably run into enough opposition to our Christianity to make us feel a bit uncomfortable. In this class, we’ll look at Peter’s instructions to the early church as they faced persecution and see how we can apply these timeless instructions to our present situations. No matter what we face, we will be able to stay strong in the tough times. |

Join us this spring as we explore the most important 24 hours in human history—the day that Jesus Christ was crucified. Along the way, we will learn how to tell time “Bible style,” discover the historical roots and Christian implications of the Feast of Passover, pull up a chair at the Last Supper, pray in Gethsemane and attend court proceedings. We will round out our study by standing at the foot of the cross and waiting at the entrance to the tomb on that first, chilly Easter morning. The 10 lessons in this series will take you on a trip that you’re not likely to forget.
SIMPLY THE BEST: A STUDY OF THE BOOK OF HEBREWS
Pastor Josh Cook and Pastor Steve Adams
Seminar Room
Click for class notes: Lesson 1 , Lesson 2 , Lesson 3 , Lesson 4 , Lesson 5 , Lesson 6 , Lesson 7 , Lesson 9
He’s the greatest. No, not Mohammed Ali, but Jesus Christ. This is the message of Hebrews, which is a book written to first-century Jews who believed that their religion, Judaism, was the best religion—one that expressed true worship and devotion to God. But Christ came and fulfilled the Law of the Prophets by conquering sin and shattering all barriers to God, freely providing eternal life. Simply put, Jesus made better what was already good. He is the perfect revelation of God, the final and complete sacrifice for sin, the compassionate and understanding mediator and the only way to eternal life. Join us this spring as we find that a life lived with Christ can only be … simply the best!

SOUL FEAST—UNDERSTANDING AND PURSUING THE SPIRITUAL BENEFITS OF GODLY DISCIPLINE IN YOUR LIVE
Wanda Burgund, Pastor Derrill Sharp, Pastor Ron Markese
Fellowship Hall – F
Click for class notes: Lesson 5
Our society constantly bombards us and our families to pursue success through material indulgence. This obsession with personal appearance and fame fills the media, and many are caught in these pursuits. As Christians, we can also get caught in these values if we are not careful. During these classes, we will examine what really feeds our souls and how to arrange our attitudes and time choices to nurture what is everlasting and pleasing to God. Prov. 19:8 tells us, “Those who get wisdom do themselves a favor.” Do yourself a favor; join us in the FEAST!

GOURMET MEALS IN A FAST FOOD WORLD—SELECTING THE BEST FOR YOUR LIFE IN THE CRUSHING CROWD OF BUSY
Wanda Burgund, Pastor Derrill Sharp, Pastor Ron Markese
Fellowship Hall – F
Click for class notes: Lesson 1 , Lesson 2
Fast food works. We all know that. Fast food satisfies immediate hunger, tastes good and, of course, is fast. It allows us to hurry toward other things—some good and others not so good. We understand how eating on the run endangers our health and strains our budgets. When we apply this to our spiritual lives, we also see the destructive nature of the fast food that the world offers us, and we choose, instead, to feed on the deep truths of Scripture and the benefit of “gourmet” kingdom living. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Do yourself a favor. Change your menu from fast food to gourmet!

THE OFFICE: TAKING GOD WITH YOU TO WORK
Pastor Josh Cook, Pastor Rich Wooten, Pastor Steve Adams
Fellowship Hall (Feb. 21 - Mar. 28)
Click date for class notes: Feb 21, Mar 28
In Mark 5:19, Jesus said, “Go to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.” Testimony is a powerful tool of connection. It touches each of us as we share or listen to the witness of God at work in the world. Each week, several people from Calvary Church will share their stories of God’s protection, provision, guidance or healing in their lives. This time of remembrance and encouragement will focus on the powerful ways in which faith grows when people tell others what they have seen, heard and experienced on their journeys with Christ. Weekly topics will be outlined, and those who volunteer will speak. People who attend to simply listen are welcome and are important to the class. God is at work in the world, at Calvary Church and in the lives of people all around you. Come to listen, and come to share. |
