“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint…” Proverbs 29:18
In 1954, William Goldling wrote a fictional book called Lord of the Flies. The book tells a story of a group of boys marooned on a tropical island after their plane was shot down. The book shows the inner workings of people who live in a societal system without structure and rules; eventually the boys have no restraint and turn to violence. There is something unique about the presence of rules that helps keep people grounded.
Boundaries and rules regulate our lives on a daily basis. When you get into a car, you put on your seatbelt. When the light is red, you stop. We learn the principle of boundaries at an early age, and we live by this principal the rest of our lives. The Bible tells us in Proverbs that “where there is no revelation, the people cast of restraint.” This verse is talking about the revelation of the law of God. Without it, we give into sin.
Thankfully, we can have the kind of vision and restraint in our lives that help us live abundantly. There can be healthy boundaries in our relationships, in our jobs, in our finances and in many other places in our lives. The word used for revelation is the same word used for vision. Vision is so important to keep our life regulated. Not just any vision; we need God’s vision! Do you have God’s vision for your life? Do you have God’s vision for your family? Do you have God’s vision for your finances? Is there any area in your life where restraint has been cast off? If so, it’s time to put on our prayer glasses and get God’s vision.
