And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

Mary and Joseph hoped to have a private, comfortable place to bring their child into the world. When the time came, there was no such place, so they settled for a dirty manger—a trough where animals lay. This would be the first of many times when Jesus, our High Priest, would take a lowly position. Advent reminds us that Jesus wants the highest place in our lives. Will we make room for Him?
